Introduction to Riding to Hounds

This is a very unique day for anyone who has never done this before and a good brush up day for those who have. It is to be held at a private cattle ranch where we are blessed to have permission to ride. This beautiful desert countryside offers many natural challenges and plenty of game to chase. This year we will have older seasoned hounds participating, a true trial run.

Mission Statement: We are a diverse group of riders, brought together by love of horses, open spaces, country values and riding with a fine pack of foxhounds as they work a scent. We welcome riders of all levels who share these passions

Schedule of the day: Please arrive around 8:30a.m, have your waivers ready. A greeter will instruct you where to park. There will be lots of people there to help you get ready. Prepare your horse and be mounted by 9:20 a.m. so we can ride off around 9:30 a.m. after introductions and guidelines. A hunt is always prompt. The riding portion of the day will probably be 2 hours (8-10 miles) and is formed into 3 main groups. First field (advanced group) is a fast group that may jump 3 ft. coops and will remain behind the hounds and huntsman as much as possible. Second field (intermediate riders) is a moderate to fast group that goes through gates at fences - a no jumping field. Third field is called Hilltoppers which is a walk and trot group catering to the slowest rider. Hilltoppers is suggested for horses who are not comfortable with the excitement of a group of horses moving off at a pace. At stops you can always change to a different field. This is traditionally an English sport but we really encourage Western and Endurance riders to try it. Helmets are required. After the ride we will gather to eat our lunches and listen to Master Paine explain the dynamics and history of this exciting sport. We encourage all participants to join Santa Fe Hunt for a thrilling 2020/21 season starting with Autumn Hunting, October 21, 2020 and Opening Hunt, November 14, 2020.
